Prevalence of trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole resistance genes among Stenotrophomonas maltophilia clinical isolates in Egypt

Abstract Stenotrophomonas maltophilia is an important multidrug resistant nosocomial pathogen. Trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole (TMP/SMX) considered the drug of choice for treatment S. infections, thus emerging resistance to TMP/SMX poses a serious threat. In present study we aimed investigate frequency genes ( sul1, sul2, dfrA ), and evaluate their relatedness with integron 1 (int1), insertion sequence common regions (ISCR) among 100 from different clinical isolates in Egypt. Isolates were identified biochemically confirmed by VITEK2. Detection sul1 , sul2 genes, int1 ISCR elements was performed PCR. Among 16 isolates, gene detected all them, it associated presence isolates. The 6 out (37.5%), only 2 (12.5%) harboured gene. 10 (62.5%) 4 them 84 sensitive 15 (17.8%), (19%) (7.1%). None susceptible had or genes. These findings point increasing our region, so adoption prudent use antimicrobial agents establishment surveillance system are desperately needed.
